'Kantoke' floor table
D: 24.5 in (62 cm); H: 6 in (15 cm)
'Kantoke' floor table. Origin: Kamu hill tribe, Laos.

Travelers to Chiang Mai would be familiar with the Kantoke dinner, the traditional dining style of the North. 'Khan' means bowl and 'toke' is a small, low, round floor table made of rattan or lacquer ware. Diners sit on the floor around the table and share numerous dishes. This is where the dining style got its name. At Kantoke dinners, visitors are seated on the floor around a Kantoke with Northern dishes on it and eat while watching traditional Thai and Northern dances and hill tribe culture shows.

Today, two types of Khantoke are widely available. One is the Yuan Khantoke, made of teak and widely used in Northern Thailand. The other, the Lao Khantoke, is three-legged and made from bamboo strips and woven rattan. It is used mainly in Northeastern Thailand, Laos and Yunnan.

Our Kantoke is an original design, one of a kind, made of rattan by the Kamu hill tribe in Laos, for their everyday use. It was selected by one of our contributors on a visit to the Kamu hill tribe in Laos.
