This serves as the catalog for a show mounted in Hong Kong in early 1997 that highlighted five of the most well known artists working in Hanoi today. They are Nguyen Quan, Thanh Chong, Pham Quang Vinh, Le Quang Ha and Pham Minh Tuan.
Easel painting is still preserved in Vietnam as a genuine original offspring of traditional art and painters have barely opened their doors to exposure until recently. While such a foreign exhibit cannot be said to be the most representative of Vietnamese art, this show is characterized by structured painting and the breaking off of figures and shapes which is almost asymptotic to abstractionism, the concern of human fate and sexual love and the traditional ancient spirit which still lurks somewhere in the everyday life of the Viets. |
