Possession songs or chau van (also called "medium songs" or "female diviner incantations") are sung during the trance sessions (len dong) of the dong bong ritual ceremonies. The chau van is extremely rich in both melody and rhythm, borrowing from almost all the other popular arts of North Vietnam, like ca tru, quan ho, or the songs from Central Vietnam, like ho Hue and the songs of the minorities. Today van chau is a medium song sung in temples or other places dedicated to ritual ceremonies.
