Among the many traditional instruments of Japan, the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) is unique in having a highly developed solo repetoire without ties to vocal music.

Virtually every one of the many shakuhachi schools now in existence can be traced back to the Fuke-shu and the repertoires of most schools include a set of meditative solo pieces which derive from the Fuke tradition. These pieces are generally known as honkyoku ('original music').
