Ceramic Kitchen Jar
Ceramic, 13

The production of ceramics in Vietnam dates back to the reign of Emperor Trieu Vu De (207-137 B.C.). Throughout time, evidence of these art objects has been discovered during the excavations of tombs, and while digging the irrigation canals which are found throughout the country.

The most well known ceramics have come from Bat Trang (outside of Hanoi), where they have adopted the use of molds and lathes and more elaborate glazes. Long ago, the inhabitants of this village erected a temple in memory of the teacher and his students which introduced the art to the village.

The pottery featured here is from the countryside. It was not envisioned as decorative art, but as part and parcel of the total environment in daily life. Each piece is unique because they are made by hand by people who work in the fields the rest of the day. These vessels are used for practical purposes, and are found in the homes of the villagers. During our travels we became convinced that their simplicity would make for beautiful decorative art in our homes in America.

Vietnamese art has traditionally adjusted the scale of each piece to strive for unity and harmony by blending with their natural surroundings. These pots reflect that harmony, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

An everyday kitchen jar used for storing liquids such as water, rice wine or oil, this jar would look great on any shelf and can be used as a vase.
